In addition, Save Mart has deployed the Retalix RF- and voice-enabled warehouse management system (WMS) at the Roseville distribution center.

“When we began our course of making the best privately owned, regional grocery chain in the country much larger and more efficient, we knew we’d need to combine the best practices of both companies,” said Steve Junqueiro, President and COO. “In tandem, our supply chain system infrastructure needed an overhaul to handle the mission-critical requirements of our new organization. That’s why we turned to Retalix – for the experience of their personnel and the rich grocery functionality of the company’s software.”

“The Save Mart project reflects our sharp focus on the grocery segment and the tight integration of our supply chain software suite,” said Reuben Halevi, president of Retalix Supply Chain Solutions division. “This implementation will improve business processes and enhance supply chain efficiencies that lead to increased competitiveness.”

Top 10 Tips

Lowering Your Food Bill

Packed with savings…these Top 10 Tips can stretch your food dollar.

Everyone looks for a good value, particularly when their budget is limited. Food is no exception. Whether we are driven by a personal circumstance – an addition to the family, the loss of a job, relocation to a new neighborhood, a change in our health or eating habits – or an external force like an uncertain economy, we all would like to spend less to live. Lowering our overall food bill means more than just spending less at the check stand. Ultimately, we also need to lower our fuel costs to go to the store, select higher-value products, and ensure that we get the most flavor and nutrition from the foods we choose.

  1. Eat more home-cooked meals. Convenience has its price. A meal at a restaurant, even at a fast-food restaurant, costs as much as 50 percent more than the same meal prepared at home. When you put together a meal yourself, you have more control over its fat, sodium, and carbohydrate content. Extend the benefits of home cooking to meals at school and work. Brown-bagging lunch can save at least $3 a day, at least $15 a week, at least $750 a year.

  2. Plan ahead and make a list. Know what you would like to cook, check your pantry, and make a shopping list. Sticking to that list can eliminate impulse and I-think-we’re-out-of-this buying. This also saves fuel by preventing multiple trips to the store to buy missing or forgotten ingredients and condiments.

  3. Buy store brand products. The generic yellow box with plain black lettering and the bland, tasteless food product inside is long gone. Today’s house brands – Sunny Select and Sunnyside Farms, for example – offer quality and flavor that are comparable, and many times superior, to national brands at prices that are about 20 percent lower.

  4. Use coupons. A quarter here, 50 cents there – it all adds up. Coupons make it possible to try that interesting new food item, bring an otherwise too-expensive ingredient or condiment into your pantry, and cut the bottom-line cost of every trip to the grocery store.

  5. Avoid food shopping on an empty stomach. Hungry shoppers have a tendency to buy more impulsively – less nutritious foods, larger volumes, and unnecessary ingredients and items.

  6. Stock up on the basics. Take advantage of buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) and deepdiscount sales for flour, rice, pasta, sugar, canned and bottled goods, and other pantry staples. You can even freeze butter without altering its consistency and flavor.

  7. Store foods properly. Potatoes, onions, and other root crops last longer when you store them in a cool, dark, dry space. Protect meats and fish from freezer burn by vacuumpacking them or wrapping them in airtight packaging. Check the temperature in your refrigerator’s crisper – if it’s too cold, frost will spoil your produce just as quickly as heat.

  8. Make the most of highly perishable foods. Serve fresh produce first on the day’s right after your trip to the store and then supplement with frozen produce later in week. Include fresh fruit in breakfasts, sack lunches, snacks, and desserts while they are plump and sweet. Wilted lettuce, limp celery, and soggy peaches wind up in the garbage can, along with the money you paid for them.

  9. Cook foods to their optimal temperatures. Steam vegetables until they are tender, not mushy, and stop before they lose their bright color. Invest in a meat thermometer to ensure that your meats are neither under- nor overdone. Undercooked food brings the risk of foodborne diseases; overcooked food loses nutrients and flavor.

  10. Recycle leftovers. The roast beef left over from dinner on Sunday will make quick-andeasy French dip sandwiches on Monday. Turn aging bananas into banana bread or blend them into shakes and smoothies. Add steamed vegetables to stews, soups, or casseroles. Our grandparents were on the right path when they practiced “Waste not, want not.”

Maximizing the value of our food purchases doesn’t take a lot of effort. A bit of thoughtful planning, some judicious selections, and proper food preparation will help stretch our food dollars and enable us to feed our families flavorful, nutritious meals everyday.

FoodMaxx Stores Combine Multiple Fundraising Events to Help "Jerry's Kids"

Shamrock Sales, Motorcycle Rides, Product Promotions, and TV Time Build Store, Employee, and Customer Support for MDA

Modesto, Calif., August 15, 2008FoodMaxx stores, owned and operated by Save Mart Supermarkets, are participating in multiple fundraising efforts to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The company co-sponsored the Sierra Hope Ride in June. Stores chainwide are offering their customers shamrock icons to generate contributions at check stands through August 19, and are participating in the MDA’s Aisles of Smiles product promotion through the end of the month. And employees will volunteer to staff the phones during Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day telethon.

“’Jerry’s Kids’ are everyone’s kids,” said Steve Junqueiro, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Save Mart Supermarkets. “By supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association we help build hope that the potential of everyone stricken with this disease will be realized, and that one day this diagnosis will no longer cause fear and uncertainty.”

Save Mart Supermarkets is a charter sponsor of the annual Sierra Hope Ride, a police-assisted, non-stop ride from Modesto through the scenic foothills of California’s scenic Gold Country to historic Jamestown. Presented by Mitchell’s Modesto Harley-Davidson and Jamestown Harley-Davidson to raise funds for the MDA, the event gathered over 1,500 riders last June and enabled the company to contribute $80,000 to the MDA.

Through August 19, customers at FoodMaxx stores have the opportunity to purchase green shamrock MDA icons for $1 and gold icons for $5. In addition, all the stores will participate in the MDA’s Aisles of Smiles promotion, which generates donations from manufacturers when customers purchase their products. During the first week of icon sales, all of the company’s stores collected nearly $50,000 in customer contributions.

On September 1, employees from FoodMaxx stores, distribution centers, and offices will volunteer their time during the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon. Volunteers will answer telephones in the studios of KTVU Channel 2 in the San Francisco Bay Area, KMPH Channel 26 in Fresno, and KQCA/My58 Channel 58 in Sacramento. Company executives will present donations to the MDA as the company’s volunteers answer the phones.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency working to defeat muscular dystrophy and related diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and professional and public health education. The Association's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors. For more information, visit www.mda.org.

FoodMaxx Customers
Swipe S.H.A.R.E.S. Cards to Earn Up to $500,000 for Schools and Other Groups

New S.H.A.R.E.S.Points Program Makes Fundraising Easy, Efficient and Secure and Is Open to a Wide Range of Organizations.

Modesto, Calif., August 4, 2008FoodMaxx stores have launched a new, simple, secure S.H.A.R.E.S. (Support Humanities, Arts, Recreation, Education, and Sports) points program to boost funding for local schools and organizations. Shoppers simply swipe their S.H.A.R.E.S. cards at the check stand to earn up to 3 cents of every dollar they spend on qualified purchases. This ongoing program will generate up to a total of $2 Million per year in funds for schools and other organizations.

“The current economic climate makes fundraising more challenging,” said John Kelly, VP of Marketing for Save Mart Supermarkets. “The S.H.A.R.E.S. program makes it possible for our customers to support their schools, churches, clubs, or organizations without feeling the pinch.” Nearly every school, church, club, or organization is eligible to participate and may request a S.H.A.R.E.S. card for each member. Organizations may sign up online at www.foodmaxx.com or by calling 1-800-477-5437. Up to 250 cards are provided free of charge to each group; a nominal fee of $0.50 is assessed for each card over the initial 250. S.H.A.R.E.S.points program cards do not expire.

S.H.A.R.E.S. program participants simply swipe their cards at the check stand when they shop at any FoodMaxx store to earn up to 3 percent of their qualified purchases for the organization of their choice. S.H.A.R.E.S. cards carry no value and are easily replaced if lost, stolen, or misplaced. Because the cards are issued to the beneficiary organizations they do not contain any member’s personal information.

S.H.A.R.E.S. contributions will be paid out at the end of each calendar quarter. FoodMaxx stores will contribute up to $500,000 per year or up to $125,000 per quarter to the program. If the aggregate earned benefits of the participants during each quarter exceed these limits, the donations will be prorated to reflect the points earned by each beneficiary group.
